Serta Mattresses -- Reviews of the Serta product Line and More Mattress Brand Comparisons

Serta mattresses rank number three in sales, behind Sealy and Simmons. But Serta certainly does a thriving business. They also have the tag line "We Make the World's Best Mattresses" and those cute sheep in their ads have their own page on the website.

Serta stands out in mattress brands comparisons because of their Continuous Support Innerspring.

Rather than having individual coils linked together with extra wire or placed in pockets, Serta has the coils interwoven with each other, each coil attached to its neighbor in a continuous pattern.

They claim that this reduces "motion transfer" that happens when one bed partner turns around and the other partner gets jolted awake by the movement.

Of course Simmons, with their pocketed coil design, makes the same claims, and I'm sure Sealy probably brags about reducing motion transfer somewhere in their marketing, though I haven't found it yet.

It is safe to say that all the mattress companies are recognizing this as a problem with innerspring types, and have been working hard to solve it. Which one is most successful is something you'll have to prove to yourself by testing out the mattress with your partner. Make sure you stay still while your partner turns around beside you to evaluate the results, if motion transfer is an ongoing problem for you.

Serta Mattresses and Product Lines

Serta innerspring mattresses come in four models: Perfect Sleeper, Perfect Day, Vera Wang and Sertapedic.

They also have three foam mattress lines: Vera Wang Specialty, Pure Response and True Response.

The innerspring lines come in the typical firmness options or "comfort levels" -- firm, plush and pillowtop.

  • The Perfect Sleeper has a coil count of 532 for the queen size, quite adequate considering Consumer Report's 390 minimum. It also features the continuous support innerspring as mentioned above, plus foam encasement for better edges -- which all the name brand mattresses offer in one form or another. You can get memory foam padding if you wish, which Serta claims is engineered to make it more breathable and cooler than regular old memory foam, which is nice if it works.
  • The Perfect Day model has a coil count of 924 for the queen, and what they call Free Flex Innerspring with 5-Zone Support. This is exclusive technology that combines their cornerstone continuous coil design with an "advanced open coil design" that is supposed to make it even better. The Perfect Day also offers other customizable features, such as natural latex and Talalay latex padding if you choose. Also some other padding with exclusive technology that is supposed to increase oxygen levels, help circulation, ease pain, and so on. Very little of this cool technology is explained, though. You can also get the specialized memory foam.
  • The Vera Wang Collection feature some very cool fabrics and effects by this big-name designer. The coil count for the Sweetheart bed is 532 for a queen, and for the higher-end beds, 814. Some models feature the continuous support innerspring core, and others the Free Flex, which is more expensive.
  • The Sertapedic is the budget model, and coil count is not given. However, it does feature yet another patent-pending technology in their coil innerspring core, which, while not as excellent as the core structures in their more expensive lines, is still claimed to be better than what's inside other mattresses in the same class.

The bottom line on the Serta Mattresses is, they sound quite wonderful, as do the Simmons and Sealy. After getting a good picture of what is inside each of them and how the coil structures and the padding compares, it's time to go shopping.
