Sealy Mattresses -- Best Mattresses or Best Marketing?

Sealy mattresses are the leaders in this vast field, selling over $1 billion worth every year. So does this mean Sealy makes the best mattresses or are they just really good at selling and marketing?

As always, it's really a matter of personal preference. Sealy does market the Posturepedic, a well-respected, popular, well-rated product line. And their reach is wide and far. You can get Sealy mattresses in Sears stores, in big-box sleep stores and discount centers, online, and so on. No problem finding a Sealy mattress.

What might be a problem is finding the exact Sealy mattress you want at the price you need. This is the problem with all mattress brands shopping, as I have mentioned in this article on how to compare mattresses.

What makes Sealy Mattresses Stand Out In Mattress Comparisons

Sealy has worked hard on perfecting the innerspring-plus-foam combo mattress. Ever since memory foam mattresses came on the market along with a resurgence in popularity of natural latex mattresses, manufacturers of innerspring types have been trying to figure out how to compete against these products.

Sealy mattresses do the job well. Their Posturepedic line of innerspring mattresses uses generous amounts of latex and memory foam padding in innovative ways that attempt to combine the solid support of steel coils with the cushiony comfort of latex and memory foam.

Comfort and Support

Most Sealy innerspring mattresses use varying densities of foam in layers. They also have "pressure relief inlays" with "zones" to provide the best support. The zones are made from either poly foam (in the lower cost models) or memory foam (in the higher-cost products). They are located where you need the most support and protection from pressure points, such as in the hips, shoulders, and knees.

All Sealy mattresses come in four grades of firmness, which they call firm (Level 1), cushion firm (Level 2), plush (Level 3) and ultra plush (Level 4).

Sealy mattresses have the typical "good, better, best" models, but what differentiates these from each other? What makes the price go up or down from one product to another?

Well, with Sealy spring mattresses, it comes down to three main items: coil count, type and thickness of foam padding, and the number of "pressure relief zones." And of course mattress thickness goes up with the price.

Sealy's Preferred Series is their lowest-cost models in the Posturepedic line, and comes with a "3-zone pressure relief inlay" made of foam. It has a coil count of 736 for a queen, a very respectable number considering that the minimum coil count recommended by experts and Consumer Reports is 390 (or you can just make it an even 400).

The next step up is the Reserve Series, with a coil count of 782 for a queen, and the "3-zone pressure relief inlay" is made from memory foam, which is meant to attract buyers who can't decide whether they want innerspring or memory foam. Well, guess what, says Sealy, you can have the best of both.

At the top of the Posturepedic line is the Signature Series. It has a coil count of 782 and a "7-zone pressure relief inlay." This Series combines innerspring, memory foam and latex foam in what should be a sublime sleeping experience.

The Signature is a very thick mattress as you can see from the photo. Sealy does not provide the thickness dimension of each model as Simmons does, but that's probably because it will vary according to what topper you choose. Just a clue -- their line of Sealy sheets fit mattresses up to 20 inches in thickness!

Sealy Latex Foam and Memory Foam Mattresses

Sealy also produces three product lines of all-foam mattresses.

Their "Spring Free" has a 100% latex core and a 20-year limited warranty.

Their "TrueForm" is made up of multi-density layers of memory foam. Like all memory foam mattresses, it conforms to your body shape and adjusts to every position. It offers a 20-Year Limited Warranty.

Sealy Budget Mattresses

Sealy offers two product lines that promise quality construction at a budget price.

The innerspring budget version is simply called the Sealy Brand Collection. It offers "body zoned coils" and 20 percent more foam than the industry standard. Of course we don't really know what the industry standard is, but it has a nice ring to it! There is only a 3-year limited warranty compared to a 10-year limited warranty on the Posturepedic innerspring mattresses.

The Comfort Series is the budget version of all-foam mattresses. It has a poly foam core with memory foam layer on top. Sealy claims it provides the benefits of foam, such as minimal motion transfer (important if you're sharing a bed) and good support for your nick and spine. The limited warranty is 10 years.
